I love Europe. So much so I wanted to explore each and every city.
After saving for quite some time, my husband and I decided we can afford Europe for a second time on a budget.
Our first stop for this trip was Zürich and some may ask why. Simply because the cheapest fare i found to the European countries I plan to visit was through Zurich.
Zürich is known as one of the most expensive cities to live in and judging from the price of the hotel accommodation we saw, we decided that our stay in this city will not be long – so my husband and I we agreed to stay 3 days and 2 nights in this city.
As with previous travels, my husband researches the transpo going there and around the city and i take care of researching for the accommodation.
Being the cheap skate that I am, I am always on the prowl for bargains. So I found this hotel near the airport – Welcome Inn at a reasonable cost and decided to book. One consideration aside from the cost is that my Aunt and Uncle from the US will be joining us in this trip and we don’t want them getting lost going to the hotel, so I went ahead and booked the hotel. Added bonus that the hotel has free airport shuttle to ferry its customers to and from the airport. My other consideration (aside from the cost) for choosing accommodation is that it should be near a subway station and Hotel Welcome Inn is just that – about 5 minute walk to Kloten station. Upon arrival, we bought a 1-day unlimited pass which costs CHF 13.20. The ticket allows unlimited ride either by bus, trams or trains within the city – not bad i think for the price at converted cost of P633.
Our first stop was Grossmunster church – to give thanks for a safe travel. Grossmunster church, according to wikipedia is one of the four major churches in the city. The church has a replica outside you can find a bench to sit for you to enjoy an elevated view of the city.
Our next stop was another church, just across the street – the Fraumunster – literally translated in English as women’s minster.
Along the way we passed by stalls selling sweets and we got a couple of treats for the little boy — which costs 6 swiss francs.
Second day in Zürich being a sunday, we decided to go to church at Fraumunster. The priest, perhaps not recognizing us as one of their regular parishioners, approached us and had a chit-chat with us – where we found out that the church is not catholic but Anglican. We asked if okay to stay and attend the service and he said yes. we may all have different name for our God but it all boils down to believing to one Supreme Being right?
Next stop after church is Lake Zürich. Then off to Lindenhof — which is my favorite place in Zürich. a public park on top of a hill, offering a panoramic view of the city.
Headed the next day to catch our train to Vienna. One good thing when traveling by train is having a wonderful view of the place. Below are pictures of the rural side of Zürich blanketed by snow
Some tips: children below 12 years enjoy half fare in trains/metro
When buying tickets, there is a first class and second class ticket, so be careful where you sit. We sat, unwittingly, at the first class cabin and there were inspectors who informed us that our tickets are for second class. The guy was nice though – when he found out we were tourists, he just asked us to move and told us there is a penalty next time of 100 swiss francs (i think).
Second class seats though are great seats (at least coming from a Philippines setting) — so i recommend buying those still
